Absences If you know your child is going to be absent, please let me know as soon as possible, whether it is due to a trip or sickness. There are forms in the office you can fill out for educational trips. Please be sure to fill it out before your child misses school. If you are sick or have an appointment, you can send an e-mail ([email protected] ) and copy the secretary ([email protected]) as well. If you are unable to e-mail, a note the following day upon your child's return with reason for absence is expected. If your family will be taking a trip and learning will take place, you can request an excused absence form from the office or find it on the MPTS website. Please request the excused absence two weeks prior to the trip.
Birthday Celebrations Children may wish to celebrate their birthday with their classmates. This can only be done during lunch. Chaperones for Field Trips All volunteers must be CMS registered yearly. Register by following this link www.cmsvolunteers.com to be eligible to be a chaperone. I will select different chaperones from the approved list after sending a sign-up genius or email to the parents in the class prior to each field trip.
Chess First graders receive chess instruction during the first semester.
Communication A successful year will be the result of great communication between teachers, parents, and students. Dessert In an effort to promote healthy food choices, first graders may only purchase dessert on Fridays in the cafeteria.
Dismissal All car riders must use the carpool procedure. All early dismissals must be signed out by 3:30 in the office.
Dress Code Please send your child to school in comfortable clothes and shoes everyday. For safety reasons, flip flops are not allowed to be worn at MPTS. We go outside everyday unless there is inclement weather. Tennis shoes/sneakers are required on PE days. The temperature in the classroom is not within our control. Therefore, if your child gets cold easily, please send a sweater or sweatshirt for your child to wear.
MPTS has a dress code. Boys need to have their pants at their waists held with a belt. Girls need to have shorts and skirts that are at finger tip length when standing and shirt straps that are at least three fingers wide.

Flip Flops For the safety of your child, flip flops are not permitted at MPTS.
Folders for homeroom are yellow. These folders are sent home nightly, even weekends, as a communication tool between parent and the school. Please check it daily. Put all notes, field trip forms, and money in the homeroom folder. Please send a note to school with your child if:
1. Regular transportation changes. Dismissal changes must be confirmed with a note or an email to the school. Students will not be sent home differently, unless a note is provided. This must be done prior to 3:00 p.m.
2. Your child is absent from school.
3. Your child must leave school early. A parent must sign the child out in the office. This must be done prior to 3:30 p.m.
4. There is a situation that might affect your child. (ie. ill family member, move, personal crisis, etc.)
I will teach your child what to do with the contents of their folder at school and you need to do the same by making it their responsibility to show the folder to you every day and pack it in their book bag each night.
Grading With the exception of tests, most finished classwork will have a comment, a smiley face, stamp or a sticker. Tests are graded, recorded, and averaged to determine your child's grade for the six-week term.
No letter grades are used in 1st grade. After a child has been assessed and exhibits a skill or behavior we use the following codes:
D - Developing, P - Progressing , M - Mastery, E - Exemplary Mastery. I will use tests, class assignments, and classroom observations to determine how your child is performing. You can help your child by reviewing all corrected work that comes home, reviewing questions they missed, and practicing problems by inserting different numbers.
Homework There will be optional math paper and pencil homework in first grade. Your child is expected to read every night for 15 minutes. This will be recorded on a reading log. If your child cannot yet read on his or her own, you may read with your child and record it on the reading log. Independence This is the year of independence for your child. It is important your child walks to our classroom without parental assistance and takes responsibility for his/her belongings both at school and at home.
Journals Students will use their notebooks for writing and problem solving in literacy, math, and morning work.
Leader of the Week The leader of the week is a child who has demonstrated responsibility, followed the 7 Habits, and has lead by example within the classroom and the school. He or she has followed the rules in the classroom, the cafeteria, the hallways, and on the playground. The child has consistently performed his or her classroom job with a positive attitude. The class nominates and votes for the Leader of the Week each Friday.
Literacy First graders are assigned to word work classes based on assessment data. These groups are flexible. You will be notified of your child's word work class changes throughout the year. Any concerns regarding class work, homework, or performance in this class should be directed to your child's word work teacher. Changing for classes will not occur until sometime in September.
Lunch You are more than welcome to come eat with your child in the cafeteria. Your child may choose 1 friend to eat with them. Please be mindful of when our class leaves the cafeteria so your child does not linger behind. We go directly to the playground following lunch. Due to allergies, only your child may eat items you bring for lunch.
Math Students remain in their homeroom classes for math. Our school uses a math program called enVision 2. The program is very student-centered, so it uses hands-on manipulatives and problem solving. The teacher is more of a facilitator.
Nametags Students will be issued one picture ID nametag free of charge at the beginning of the school year. These nametags contain health information in a coded barcode and are used for buying breakfast and lunch, logging onto the computer, and borrowing books from the media center.

PBIS MPTS implements a school-wide positive behavior plan. Students are given reminders throughout the day if behavior does not meet expectations. After several warnings, a student may be given a Student Alert. After discussing the situation with your child, please sign the form and return it to school. Once a child receives three student alerts within a month, he/she will be moved off of Gold Level and certain privileges may be revoked. Please refer to the Code of Student Conduct handbook.
Pizza Hut Book-It This reading incentive program will be used alongside the yellow reading cards. Students who read five nights of every week during each month will receive a coupon good for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. The program operates from October through March.
PTA Please join the PTA and get involved with what is going on in our school. There are many opportunities to volunteer and show your child that you too value what is going on here. I'd love for our class to have 100% participation!

Report Cards Report cards come home every quarter. This is an opportunity to look for growth experiences for your child in academics as well as behavior. There is a new report card this year. The General Learner Outcomes, learning behaviors, will be indicated with a 1-On My Way, 2-Working Toward, 3-On My Own, 4-I Can Teach Others. The Report Card Standards Rubric to evaluate how your child is meeting grade level standards with be indicated with letters, D-Developing, P-Progressing, M-Mastering, E-Exemplary Mastery, N/I - No Indicator. No indicator means we did not evaluate this standard during this quarter.
Scholastic Books I will be sending Scholastic Book order forms home every month. The due date will always be the 25th of that month. When you order, please use our classroom code FGFV7. The books will come to the class and I will send them home with your child. This is a great way to earn books for our classroom library.

Transportation It is a school policy to send a note anytime your child's transportation changes.
